Emmett Till Article 11.6.16

Keith Beauchamp made a documentary called ” The Untold Story of Emmett Till” and while traveling to show his film, met with law enforcement officials about reopening Emmett’s case. Stanley Nelson also made the Emmett Till story into a movie titled “The Murder of Emmett Till” and encouraged his audience to send postcards to the attorney general of Mississippi, asking for the case to be reopened. Both men got their wish because of information discovered on their films. More specifically, the uncovering of 10 other potential suspects, aside from Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam, came out of their movies. Because of these two men Emmett Till got another chance at justice.

Mamie Mobley made the gut- wrenching decision of not only leaving her sons casket open at his funeral, but also having his entire funeral open for the public. People from all over the states were able to see the monstrous things that were done to a 14 year old boy. She made this choice not for the simple reason of wanting people to see what had been done to her son, but so people could begin to understand the unfair, cruel way African Americans were treated. She wanted her sons death to be more than just another death, he became a symbol for one of the biggest movements in United States history.

When the films were made, because they were made around the same time period, the public saw the two mean as rivals. When asked about Keith Beauchamp, Stanley Nelson simply replied with “I’ve met him.” Unlike Mr. Beauchamp who had a little bit more to say when asked about his “competitor”, if you will. “I don’t want to talk bad about him- he knew I was working on the film. PBS turned me down many times; he’s a known documentarian,” he said. He also went on to say that because of the attention it brought to the case, it was a good thing he had made his documentary.
